| Vicksburg 1863
Grant Clears the Mississippi
The capture of Vicksburg , key to the Mississippi, ranks with
Gettysburg as on of the turning points of the American Civil War. It was
also one of Grant's finest campaigns, a true test of character and
leadership. Alan Hankinson, author of First Bull Run, here describes the
frustrating series of operations by which Grant attempted to bypass the
swamps and bayous that protected the city to the north; the Battles of
Champion Hill and Big Black River; and the siege.

Gettysburg 1863
High Tide of the Confederacy
The Confederate invasion of the Northern states was General Lee's last
great gamble. By taking the war to the Union he hoped to force Lincoln
into peace negotiations, or win support from the European powers -
watching events closely from across the Atlantic. Equally, Meade's Army of
the Potomac needed to regain it's fighting credibility after the setbacks
of Fredericksburg and saw this as an opportunity to redeem it's
honour. The clash of 150,000 soldiers from both sides would ultimately
decide the fate of the nation.

| First Bull Run 1861
The South's First Victory
At Bull Run, two inexperienced, ill-trained and poorly led armies
clashed in the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Culminating
in a stalwart defensive fight by Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson's Virginia
Brigade, this book is the story of the Confederacy's first victory. The
author, Alan Hankinson, is a freelance journalist and also the author of a
number of books including the acclaimed biography of The Times war
correspondent, William Howard Russell.

Shiloh 1862
The Death of Innocence
The first major battle in the Western Theatre of the American Civil
War, Shiloh came as a horrifying shock to both public and army. For the
first time they had an idea of the terrible price that would be paid for
the preservation of the Union. On 6 April 1862 General Albert Sidney
Johnston caught Grant by surprise and very nearly defeated him. Somehow
the federals hung on and the next day managed to drive back the hordes of
grey-clad rebels. Shiloh would be the benchmark for the next three years
of bloody war.

| Chancellorsville 1863
Jackson's Lightning Strike
This remains one of the most famous battles of the Civil War,
containing a cast of fascinating characters: Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson,
'Fighting Joe' Hooker, Jubal Early and George Meade and is still
considered to be Robert E Lee's greatest victory. Outnumbered almost four
to one by the Army of the Potomac, he devised a tactical masterpiece which
routed one Federal corps after another until victory was secured. It was
to be Jackson's final battle and a fitting memorial to his military
genius.

Chickamauga 1863
The River of Death
Chickamauga - an Indian name meaning 'River of Death' - was one of the
bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. Fought in densely wooded
terrain just south of Chattanooga, this was to be the greatest
western-theatre battle of the conflict, a hard fought victory for the
Confederates that halted the advance of Rosecrans' Union Army of
Cumberland into Tennessee. The author, Jim Arnold, lives in Virginia and
has contributed several previous volumes to the series.
